Forest Fire
Sad to hear the news this morning that the Forest Arms has burned. The Forest Arms is an apartment building in Detroit and home to Peoples Records. The damage is pretty extensive and Peoples is waste deep in water.
The store has been more then just a record store for me. Peoples was more like a social club, a place to see friends, meet legends, and of course hear incredible music anytime of the day. This couldn’t have happened to a more genuine, sweet, and caring person. My heart is out to Brad and all the Peoples crew.
Brad just posted a couple mixes here last week, In The Modern Room 2, and In The Modern Room 3. If you’ve listened to the mixes, leave a comment and lift Brad’s spirits.
Brad, I know I can speak for Asaf, and say we are both thinking about you and we’re here for you; anything we can do to help.

A note from Brad:
Friends,
I am sorry to report that Detroit’s Forest Arms apartment building was lost early this morning to a massive fire. The building is toast. Our new location is in the basement of my apartment, at 5835 Third St., just south of Antoinette.
If anybody wishes to help out, how about sending a prayer out to the hundred or so people who lived there who are now homeless, and lost pets, and probably in a lot of cases, everything they owned to the blaze.
People’s Records will continue on without even really ever stopping. Unfortunately, I have to just about start over. Everything there is under about 4 feet of water. Literally.
Also, if you have any photos of the old place, email peoplesrecordsdetroit@gmail.com
I think we may be having a benefit at the Bohemian within the next week or so; details to follow.
So, if anybody wants to stop by the house on Third, Zac, Anibal and I are preparing the basement, and getting things ready for our newest incarnation.
That’s today. I don’t think anything can be done at the store right now; it’s going to take a whole lot of sump pumps to eventually get all the water out of that basement. 5,000 gallons A MINUTE were being pumped in.
Phone calls don’t really help right now; my voicemail is already full. Stop by the house on Third if you want to help.
IF YOU HAVE SOME W__D that would be great.
best,
brad
p.s. I needed a vacation anyway.
p.p.s. Still paying CA$H for old records.
The lose of People’s and Amsterdam, the coffee shop next door, is terribly tragic. Especially, in a city where most mom and pop shops don’t make it, yet these two thrived. Aside from the sadness of watching a friend have to deal with losing his store is walking by 2 days later only to watch the locked out residence having management throwing their few possessions not destroyed by fire or water out the window to them. So, I guess the moral to this story is to appreciate what you have, expect the unexpected and for god sakes BUY INSURANCE!
Thats sad news did wonder why the podcast was slow one of the best podcasts outthere. It was through a link to In The modern room part 1 i found out about brad hales and have been spreading the word ever since. Even bought a couple of records of the dude. Friends of mine visited Detroit last year and were treated to a great record buying session . Hope you get it all sorted out looking forward to the modern room 2 & 3. Interestingly i flowed a friend part1 on a disc and he’s been asking about part 2 ever since!
Oh Yeah Josh your Blog is top quality as well just to many records getting added to that wants list.

I read similar article also named FOREST ARMS, and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me
Monday I was looking for sites about Home Contents Insurance and specifically about home insurance detroit and I found your site.
We were honored to find out that the recording of” The Greatest Thing….
universe”is still going strong after twenty some years.I do have somebad news to pass on the original vocalist on Both that cut and Its our time passed away Aug 21 2008 in Toledo Oh He is regarded in Toledo as the best vocalist of this area. I am David and would liketo start conversing with you guys about the infamous Bopp Du Wopp
Bopp du Wopp music started at a birthday party in the early seventies.
Keith,Namon,Steve and others were jamming.A comment was made
as to what kind of music was being played.Thed ownly thing anyone could think was how good it was.
Bopp du Wopp music comes from the heart and soul of the artist performing a groove a pocket of music straight from the cen ter of his being. Some may confuse the p-funk with Bopp du Wopp music
however as my friend George Clinton stated once LIve your Funk.
Those who are the roots of P-funk and thoswe gifted whom perform Bopp du Wopp know the difference
